How to Wash Drapes

Weekly Maintenance
Remove dust from your drapes with your vacuum. Most vacuums have a soft brush attachment that’s perfect for the drapes. Washing the Drapes
IMPORTANT: CHECK THE TAGS Before trying to wash your draperies. Some draperies should ONLY BE CLEANED PROFESSIONALLY. NEVER wash them :
They are not specifically labeled as washable (when they are lined, make sure BOTH the drapery fabric and the lining are recorded as machine washable).
The fabric is damaged, frayed or faded (i.e. by sunlight)
The draperies are pleated
Other embellishments or trim are not recorded as color-fast
For anyone in your area, check your local yellow pages. If your draperies are machine washable, take a part of this tag and follow these steps:
Carefully remove the drapes from the rods (it’s ideal to have someone assist you with this because you will most likely need a step stool or small ladder to reach the rods). NEVER pull or tug the draperies to receive down them as this may harm the cloth, the sticks or the walls.
If the draperies are wrapped with pins or hooks, then carefully remove and set them aside.
Hand wash every panel in cool water and a gentle detergent such as Woolite. For drapes that are large, it may be much easier to use the tub in place of the sink.
On the GENTLE cycle, the curtains can be placed in your washer in the alternative, as indicated on the tag, with warm or cold water. Opt for cold if the label doesn’t indicate a temperature setting. Use a gentle detergent. Don’t overload your washer. If your draperies are bulky or large, look at carrying them or doing the panels one at a time at which you are able to use washers.
Put the curtains in a dryer on the atmosphere indicated on the tag (probably low heat). If no dryer setting is indicated, place on”no heat” (fluff) setting. Be careful to not overload the dryer.
Consider carrying them to a laundromat with oversized dryers or doing a single panel at one time. The usual source of harm to draperies during the cleaning method is warmth; when in doubt (especially if using a commercial dryer unfamiliar for you), use the”no heat” setting. Suggestion: If you are fortunate enough to have an old clothesline, then instead of the dryer, hang your draperies out to dry on the clothesline. You won’t need to worry about overheating, and the drapes will have a natural scent that is fresh. To keep fabric from fading, avoid hanging in direct sun.
Remove draperies out of your dryer promptly if desired and press. Again, assess your tag. Use a cool iron, if no sign is provided. To avoid damage, use the iron only.
Replace the pins or hooks (if any) and re-hang that the draperies on the rods. It is best to do this with another person.
