Washing the Drapes
IMPORTANT: CHECK THE TAGS Before trying to clean your draperies. Some draperies should BE CLEANED PROFESSIONALLY. NEVER wash them if:
They are not specifically labeled as washable (when they are lined, be sure BOTH the drapery fabric and the liner are recorded as machine washable).
The fabric is broken, frayed or disappeared (i.e. by sunlight)
The draperies are pleated
Trim or other embellishments Aren’t recorded as color-fast
For anyone in your area, check your regional yellow pages. Take heed of this tag and follow these simple steps if your draperies are machine washable:
Carefully remove the drapes from the rods (it’s ideal to have someone assist you with this because you will most likely need a step stool or small ladder to reach the rods). NEVER tug or pull on the draperies to get down them since this may damage the walls, the sticks or the fabric.
The draperies are hung with pins or hooks, if remove and place them apart.
Hand wash every panel in cool water and a gentle detergent such as Woolite. For drapes that are large, it could be much easier to use the tub in place of the sink.
Instead, the curtains can be put to the GENTLE cycle in your washer, as indicated on the tag using water. If the label does not indicate a temperature setting, then elect for chilly. Use a gentle detergent. DO NOT overload your washer. Consider taking them or doing the panels at some time where you can use oversized washers In case your draperies are big or bulky.
Place the drapes in a dryer on the atmosphere indicated on the label (probably low heat). If no dryer setting is signaled, put “no heat” (fluff) setting. Be careful not to overload the dryer also.
Look at doing a single panel at one time or carrying them to a laundromat with dryers. The usual source of harm to draperies during the cleaning process is warmth; if in doubt (especially if using a commercial dryer not familiar for you), use the”no heat” setting. Suggestion: If you’re lucky enough to possess an old clothesline, rather than the dryer, hang your draperies out to dry on the clothesline. You won’t need to be concerned about overheating, and the curtains are going to have odor that is natural. To keep fabric from fading, prevent hanging in sun.
