The Proper Way to Clean Stains from Rugs

No matter how careful you are, there is a good probability that you will end up having to remove some stains from both your indoor carpets and your outdoor rugs throughout the course of their lifetimes. There is, however, a method that can be used to remove almost every kind of stain, so you won’t have to spend too much time staring at those stains. The following are some suggestions for removing some of the most frequent stains from rugs:

Combine one-quarter of a teaspoon of white vinegar with one quart of warm water to remove stains from milk, soda, alcoholic beverages, or berries. After applying this mixture to the stain and allowing it to sit for a while, rinse it off with water and pat it dry.
To remove gum or wax that has melted, peel off as much as you can, then place some ice in a plastic bag and leave it on top of the stain so that it solidifies. This should remove the stain. After that, remove the discoloration by scraping it with a spoon or a butter knife. After this, use rubbing alcohol to remove any gum or wax residue that may still be present, and then vacuum the affected area.
Mix one tablespoon of ammonia with one cup of water, and then scrub the stain until it is gone. This method is effective for removing stains caused by vomit, blood, red wine, or mustard. Rinse the area thoroughly and blot it until it is dry.

How to Thoroughly Clean Area Rugs

In addition to vacuuming rugs on a regular basis once every week or two, you should also deep clean them approximately once every year. This involves covering the entirety of the rug with a foam designed for carpet cleaning, rinsing it thoroughly, and then letting it dry. After this, you should proceed to vacuum the surface. Depending on the dimensions of the rug, you might also be able to clean it using a dry cleaning method.

If you want your old rugs to continue looking their best for as long as possible, it may be best to replace them rather than try to clean them if they are starting to show signs of age. This is especially true if you have pets or children. You are welcome to look around at your leisure right now because a lot of stores carry a wide selection of area rugs in a variety of shapes, sizes, and designs from which you can make your selection. You might find it useful to look through our room ideas first to get some ideas for how you want the space to look before going out and purchasing a new rug.
