Time to start thinking about your spring cleaning
Springtime has here, and with it, warmer temperatures and flowering flowers. It could be a deep-seated drive that has been passed down from our caveman ancestors, or it could be something we learn at a young age from our exposure to popular culture and the media. In contrast, the early days of spring often inspire a desire to tidy up one’s dwelling. We are in the midst of spring cleaning now.
Do not let the thought of spring cleaning stress you out. Give the kids, or even the spouse, a few tasks to do around the house. Listen to music to pass the time and order pizza so you can skip making dinner when you’re done.
With the help of a checklist, spring cleaning can be reduced to a breeze. This cleaning is more in-depth than your average session because it targets less frequent chores and areas you may have neglected over the past year. Although the demands of each family are unique, the following checklist should serve as a helpful guide.
Decluttering. A clutter-free home is the foundation of a good spring cleaning. Now is the time to get rid of old, broken stuff, sort out donations of clothes that no longer fit, clean out the closets, and find homes for all the new stuff you’ve brought into the house. I say, “Away with the old, and in with the new!”
It’s time for cobweb patrol. Your tween or adolescent will excel at this position. They are not only young enough to not have back problems but also tall enough to use the vacuum extender to clean the crown molding and ceiling fans. Put them to work sifting through the space for any cobwebs or dust bunnies that may have escaped your regular cleaning efforts.
It’s time to clean the appliances. Start in the kitchen by getting rid of old food and emptying out your refrigerator and freezer. The next time you clean your refrigerator, remove all the shelves and drawers and wash them in warm, soapy water. Remove the oven and microwave from the wall and clean the insides of both appliances. If you do this, your refrigerator will run more efficiently and you’ll save money on your monthly electricity bill.
Window coverings such as curtains and drapes as well as shades. Every year or so, take down your draperies and curtains and get them laundered or cleaned with dust and steam cleaner. Though you likely dust your blinds more frequently, spring cleaning is an excellent opportunity to give them a thorough once-over.
Patios, decks, and other outside spaces. The warmer weather in spring allows us to spend more time outside. Your porches, decks, and patios need a little TLC before you can host barbecues, tag games, and other outdoor events. You need to beat any outdoor rugs, wipe the cushions on the chairs, and sweep.
Sheets, comforters, and mattresses. You should turn your mattress off after removing the sheets and letting it air out for a couple of hours in the bedroom. If you have a guest bed that is rarely used, now is a good time to swap the heavy winter comforter for a lighter one and give it a good washing.
Stuff like carpets, rugs, and upholstery. Cleaning your own carpets, rugs, and furniture may be a huge pain in the neck. If you already have a lot on your plate this spring, consider having a professional cleaner come in and take care of your carpets and upholstery.
