Useful Advice for Keeping Your Carpets Safe This Autumn

Are you prepared for fall now that summer is almost over? Being indoors more means making sure things like carpets are clean and ready for guests. Here are some things you can do to keep your carpets safe this autumn (and throughout the year).

KEEP OUTDOOR DEBRIS SUCH AS LEAVES AND TRASH
As the seasons change, we welcome Halloween, marvel at the changing colors of the leaves, and rake up the leaves that have fallen to the ground. However, the leaves that aren’t raked up aren’t left where they fall; the Chinook winds that sweep over the Rockies typically stirs them up. Other dirt, viruses, and debris can be blown around by the wind and tracked inside.

Keeping the exterior areas around your home’s entrances swept on a regular basis will greatly reduce the number of leaves and other debris tracked inside. This will prevent it from collecting and being stuck to the soles of your shoes.

A doormat can help prevent dirt, leaves, and other debris from being tracked inside the house. Install one in each doorway, and make use of them for everyone entering and leaving your home.

AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK, VACUUM

If you want clean carpets that last as long as possible, you need to vacuum them at least once a week. Otherwise, dirt and debris will settle into the carpet’s fibers and cause premature wear. If you can, you should vacuum your carpets every day, or at least more frequently in the rooms that see the most foot traffic. Your carpets will appreciate the extra effort, but I know it’s a pain in the neck to have to do it so often!

If you have a bagless vacuum, you should frequently inspect the filter and container. Vacuum bags should be changed at least once every three months, or more frequently if your carpets and upholstery get a lot of wear.

DO NOT BRING SHOES IN.

We can’t stress this enough: the best approach to preserve the cleanliness of your carpets is to never wear shoes indoors. The best option is to go sockless or wear slippers or socks indoors to avoid tracking in debris and viruses. Guests should also take their shoes off before entering the house. Were you afraid of the pileup of shoes? Put in a shoe rack so that everyone in the house can see it and be reminded to remove their shoes before entering the house.

TRANSFORM YOUR ROOM BY SWITCHING THE FURNITURE POSITIONS

Carpets can get damaged from too much foot traffic. In order to prevent wear and tear on your carpets from foot traffic, it is recommended that you rearrange your furniture on a regular basis. The carpet will wear more evenly over time as a bonus.

EFFICIENTLY REMOVE SPILLS

Stains from pumpkin spice lattes, hot chocolate, and other hot beverages can be tough to get out of clothing and upholstery if they’re left to set for too long while it’s cold outside. Quickly blot up and treat any spills that may occur. Many messes may be cleaned up with baking soda, and if you need more help getting rid of stains, you can always refer to our spot removal recommendations.

Carpets should be professionally cleaned once a year.

Last but not least, if you have your carpets professionally cleaned once a year, you can keep them in good condition through the fall and beyond (more often if they get especially dirty). We offer thorough carpet cleaning by trained professionals that will leave your rugs smelling like new. Get your carpets professionally cleaned now so they are in tip-top shape for guests to walk on when the holidays roll around.
